The Importance Of A Sister

© more by Shiv Sharma

Published by Family Friend Poems June 2008 with permission of the Author.

A sister is someone who loves you from the heart.
No matter how much you argue, you cannot be drawn apart.
She is a joy that cannot be taken away.
Once she enters your life, she is there to stay.

A friend who helps you through difficult times,
Her comforting words are worth much more than dimes.
A partner who fills your life with laughs and smiles,
These memories last for miles and miles.

When she is by your side, the world is filled with life.
When she is not around, your days are full of strife.
A sister is a blessing who fills your heart with love.
She flies with you in life with the beauty of a dove.

A companion to whom you can express your feelings,
She doesn't let you get bored at family dealings.
Whether you are having your ups or downs,
She always helps you with a smile and never frowns.

With a sister, you cannot have a grudge.
She is as sweet as chocolate and as smooth as fudge.
Having a sister is not just a trend.
It is knowing you can always turn to her, your best friend.

It's an amazing poem with a happy beginning. Don't wait, get together and continue sharing your love for each other. It reminded me when I found my maternal cousin. I waited day and evening by her door. She finally made it home, and I was able to see her again after 47 years. I cried, I hugged her, and my life is complete. I was able to do this for me and the memory of her aunt, my mom. Bless you. Love endures everything.

Norma, I could not ask for a better sister-in law. When I found out you had breast cancer, all I could do was cry and pray for you, I don't know what I would do without you in my life. Norma, you are more to me than just a sister-in law. You're like my sister and my best friend. I promise I will always be here for you and Dave. I know you still have a long road ahead of you. If there's anything I can do, please don't hesitate to let me know. I will continue keeping you in my prayers. I love you forever and always, Sister.

I really loved this poem! I have two older sisters and one younger sister, but nothing beats the little sister bond. I have such an intense love for her! It took me a while to warm up to my older sisters, since they are only my half-sisters from my mother's previous marriage, but I loved my little sister instantly after she was born! I want to become someone that my little sister looks up to, and I want to become her role model! I love her dearly!

I was 9 when I first found out I have a sister. I remember I would dream of knowing her and that someday we would met.

I used to watch other children play with their sisters and think to myself, I hope they know how lucky they are. It's been almost 40 years later. I would still dream of finding her someday, feeling so lonely inside, never feeling complete.

My dream of all dreams has finally came true. I found my sister, Laura. From the moment I first heard her speak, my life finally felt complete. We have not met in person; it's only been few weeks since I found her, but if my life should end and we never meet, I want her to know my life's now complete.

Oh my goodness, this has made me cry. I had two sisters, one older and one younger. Nothing can take the place of that love, both of them have gone to be with the Lord. So have all five of my brothers. I'm alone, but death has not taken my sweet memories!

I thank God for this amazing poem. I have a spiritual sister too. She's Called Liz but l call her wisdom, A friend who helps me in difficult times, l really appreciate and admire her. She's an amazing woman, full of Godly wisdom. Very strong lady, sometimes when l think about her,s he's like an angel made in heaven. l wish you could just hear her speak, oh my....you can go crazy, her voice is soft, lovely and blessed. Love cannot be measured but l can measure the love Sister has for me. Its hundreds, thousands and millions. l thank God for you.

Hello there:

I was wondering about a part in the poem regarding the use of figure of speech.

Line 3, first stanza, "She is a joy..." and Line 3 in Stanza 3, "A sister is a blessing..."

Are those two counted as metaphors? Thank you

I love these poems that are on this website. I have two sisters that I love and adore so much. Without them I don't know where I'll be. Sisters are like having a best friend wrapped up all in one. So all I have to say is that sisters are the best.

My sisters and myself almost lost our mom to a stroke, it was over two years April and myself and lil sister took care of her and nursed her on her recovery. Now two years pass and now Dad he had triple bypass surgery God allowed him with us and with some wrinkles needed ironing my sisters find with his health issues a bit to bear. I know we're all scared and at times don't know how to do the situation so I just ask you God to keep all of us in your prayers and get us all through this wrinkle.

I really love this poem. My sister will be gone now 2 years in July. Her and I were very close sisters. We spent everyday for the last 3 years of her life, and it was the best time I had ever had, and now I miss her so much. We were more than best sisters and friends. It was almost like we shared the same soul. I also want to say Happy Birthday to her in Heaven where she is at now, On June 9th will be her birthday. I miss and love you Debbi with all my heart.

Today I had a fight with my sister, I'm always mean to her even though she's so cool and always hears me out and cares for me, we're both in our 20's. We've spent all our life together and she's always played the role of an elder Sis to me. I wish I could be a little more respectful, I care for her but at the same time I'm mean as well, not 24/7 but quite frequently, I need to grow up. Today I'm very sad. I'm gonna change.

I'm 11 years old, I have twin sisters they are 8. A few days ago I had a fight with one of them I thought I would never talk to her again, I spent a WHOLE day a school feeling so depressed, and your poem helped me realize I love her too too much to stay mad at her, I thought 1 full day of not spending any time with her was the worse punishment ever. I can not imagine when I leave to college, I'll be waking up with tears in my eyes every morning. thank you, I hope you understand how much your poem has impacted me. :)

I happened across this poem today and it really captures what I saw between my two daughters. I lost my youngest daughter on Feb.28, 2010. She died from liver cancer at the age of 8. The two were best friends. I can see the loss on my oldest daughters face and it kills me. I can only imagine what is going on inside of her at this moment. She loved this poem.

This is absolutely a very touching poem that I love so much!
My sister and I are pretty close and this poem just hits the nail on the head. I adore my sister... And I'm very proud that god picked her for me . And it seems like that ever since our mom passed we have become even closer...Maybe because I'm the oldest and I'm filling a void, but whatever the reason I'll take it! God has a plan and there is a reason for everything in life. Thank you for sharing this amazing poem ! Have a good day ! :)

I read this poem, and tears came to my eyes because it describes the relationship between my and my sister so perfectly! sure, no sister bond is 100% fight-free, but still , when my sister and I do get into the odd argument it is always shortly solved because we cannot go long without speaking. We are an extremely close family, who will hopefully never loose touch! She lives in Ottawa right now, and she goes to Ottawa University, and I miss her everyday but reading this poem, and countless others makes me feel like I'm right beside her laughing and fighting over the TV. channel and song we put on! thank-you for your magical blessing through poems, it is truly a blessing to have such a talent, and I only wish I could have the same abilities someday! thank you so very much for making this poem the best part of my hectic schedule week! blessings and love
xx. Betsy
