Moving On To Pursue Goals And Dreams

My poem has been inspired by my move to China. I have traveled before as a teenager, but it is only after moving here that I have realized how grounded I have been the last ten years. The poem talks about moving on and living life to the fullest with the knowledge you're leaving the ones you love behind to be able to pursue your goals and dreams.

A Little Bird Am I

I ask but this one small thing.
Give me the worldly skies
For I cannot stay trapped here
A little bird am I....

Let me leave this here land.
Don't keep me in a cage.
Let me fly to the highest heights.
Let me come of age.
Let me soar among the clouds.
Let my wings spread into flight.
I need to be free; I need to see
The world without a fright.

I have spent my life so grounded,
But my instincts pull me up.
They tell me to go, to see the new,
To finger each buttercup.
I need to witness greatness,
need the sorrow of poverty.
I need to show the world my wings
And shed this gravity.

I want a life of freedom,
And I want to know what's real.
I want to step to the edge of earth
And watch the sea reveal.
I want to take the longest ride,
And I want to feel the wind
I want to share this life with you,
So, forgive me, for I have sinned.

For I know I'm leaving you behind
To shadow in my wake,
But I cannot stay in these four walls
Simply for your sake.
I will keep you in my mirror.
With me you'll always be.
I will share with you my tales,
And I will return to thee.

So I ask but this one small thing
Give me the worldly skies
For I cannot stay trapped here
A little bird am I....

This poem touched me in a way I didn't know poetry could. I'm an aspiring writer myself and often use bird metaphors in a sort of way that my friends think is pretentious - but to see someone else longing for that feeling that makes you feel both big and small makes me feel less alone. Thinking like this make my insides twist and my heart grow and my brain numb in confusion, but they make me feel like I can and I will make a difference.

Once I realized how each person affects the world, I felt my own emotions pushing against the barrier between my limits and the universe. The juxtaposition of my power and the power of the world makes for a surprising contrast. We may be small, but we can cover large distances. We're empowered if we stay together--us people, we're stronger than we can imagine. We just need to realize it, and we'll see how big the universe is and how we're so incredibly insignificant and so incredibly significant all at once. Thank you for your words.

I'm sorry this is such a late reply. Being in China, I tend to get emails, notifications, etc. after the fact! Thank you for your comment. The poem "A little Bird am I" hasn't gained much momentum, both on this site and on my own. I'm very grateful to hear your words and to know it has reached even one person. Please, find my other poems through the like on my profile on this site, I would appreciate any comments/support anyone has to offer.
Thanks again,
Hanna
