Till My Last Breath

I cannot promise
you that there will be no sad moments in your life,

But I promise
to wipe away your tears till my last breath.

I cannot promise
you that life will be easy and trouble-free,

But I promise
to walk with you till my last breath.

I cannot promise
you that there will be no betrayals in life,

But I promise
to remain by your side till my last breath.

I cannot promise
you that life will be cheerful and pleasant,

But I promise
to help you smile till my last breath.

I cannot promise
you that there will be no setbacks in life,

But I promise
to help you face those challenges till my last breath.

I cannot promise
you that life will be comfortable and secure,

But I promise
to make you feel safe till my last breath.

I cannot promise
you that there will be no obstacles and hurdles in life,

But I promise
to hold your hand through difficulties till my last breath.

I cannot promise
you to love forever,

But I promise
to love you till my last breath.

Interview with Top Poet Joydip Dutt

  • What makes this poem one of your favorites?
I wanted to give my spouse something special on our anniversary. Frankly speaking, I am not a prolific writer. Initially, I thought of making a greeting card with the poem "How Do I Love Thee" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning written on it. But all of a sudden, this poem happened, so this one is truly special.
  • What is one piece of advice you would offer to someone in a new relationship?
To me, the foundation of any relationship should be friendship. That means two people need to consider the other person as their equal. Only then a beautiful partnership develops, which is long-term.
  • You write about a variety of topics, such as love, friendship, and nature. Which topic is your favorite or easiest to write about? Why?
Yes, I write on many topics. But my most favorite one will always be about nature. Whatever worthwhile things I have learnt in my life, I have learnt from nature.
  • What is your favorite experience that has resulted from being published on Family Friend Poems?
There are quite a few actually. But the most satisfying experience is to watch kids from all over the world perform my poems. I happened to see them on YouTube. When I was a kid, I used to perform poems of famous poets and dreamt of a day when someone else would perform my poems too. It's a dream come true.

Thank you Richard for your comment. It means a lot to me.

It feels wonderful to receive such a beautiful compliment from the poet I really look up to.

This poem is so lovely, simple, truthful, and sweet. What a perfect poem to read as part of your marriage vows. If I ever do get married (at 68, probably never), but if I did, I would ask your permission to use this. It's just so perfect.
