Friends I'm Sorry Poem

Struggle How To Reunite With A Dear Old Friend

My poem is about passing by a dear, old friend of mine at the mall, after many years of not contacting her. I was ashamed of that fact after enjoying such a close friendship. The poem describes my struggle in initiating the conversation.

Today I Passed You By

today I passed you by
our shoulders almost touched
as your eyes diverted

in intense conversation
your emotion-filled words
floated in the evening air

did you see me?
quickly my feet reached the corner
heart pounding yet turning

to see your form fading
should I say hello?
such intimate friends

I'd seen your tears
you'd felt my heart
should I run?

a lingering glance
heart beating louder
unmovable feet stuck in the past

the silent years forming
a veiled wall between us
one simple hello

could have cascaded
the veil--the wall--
but today I passed you by

I love this poem. "One simple hello could have cascaded the veil . . . but today I passed you by." This poem is reminiscent of the many past friendships/relationships that we let go on unkindled when a simple act of acknowledgement would have made the difference. It reminds me of a similar time I passed someone I knew.
