I wanted to write a sonnet but couldn't find a worthy subject for my first one. As I read the guidelines about writing a sonnet, I realized that I could use the sonnet itself as my topic.

How To Write A Sonnet

Let's write a sonnet showing how it's done
We have our topic: that's a good first start
If not, we'd have to search a while for one
A subject that appeals to mind and heart

A list of words on point might help us next
From that, choose what you want your verse to be
And fashion rhyme by ordering the text
Ab ab times three and then g g

Iambic meter makes a lilting beat
Da DUH da DUH da DUH in packs of five
Creating gentle taps of rhythmic feet
That help to make each stanza come alive

The whole endeavor seems to be worthwhile
To give your readers something of a smile

I am a recently retired middle school teacher, living in beautiful southern Arizona. After over 30 years of teaching, it's now fun to grow and develop new hobbies, such as writing poetry. I also enjoy long walks, bird watching and rooting for my favorite football team.
