Baby Poem

The Emotions Of Motherhood

I wrote this poem within the first few weeks of my son's life. It came out of a struggle with postpartum depression. These were all things I was feeling and did not know how to express. Each emotion I felt, and sometimes still do feel, every day. I hope many other mothers may be able to read this and can relate to these very strong, exciting feelings.

He looks. She smiles.
Love at first sight.
Trust, excitement, hope for the future.
This is the beginning.

He cries. She cries.
Exhaustion.
Frustration, sadness, overwhelmed thoughts.
Will this ever end?

He sleeps. She watches.
What peace.
Joy, love, angelic looks.
This gets her through.

He needs. She comforts.
Provider.
Love, selflessness, embrace.
This is what she's made for.

He smiles. She laughs.
Renewing love.
Trust, excitement, hope for the future.
This is forever.
