Poetry Contest Semi-Finalists & Winning Poem

  1. Touching The Sky

    • By Shreya D. Chattree
    • Published by Family Friend Poems August 2018 with permission of the Author.

The poem is about a girl who wants to face all the ups and downs in life. She wants to challenge all the situations and then emerge as a free and mature bird who has discovered the whole sky, flying among the clouds. She wants to commit mistakes but only to learn from them. She wants to have a heart made of gold, which only stores love and has no hatred to show.

    in Life Lesson Poems

    Come for me, sweet tomorrow.
    Help me touch the sky.
Like a well-learned bird opens its wings,
I, too, want to fly high.

  2. Cool Summer

Summer is the hottest season, and some people dread having summer around, but if we all see summer in a different way, then we can find so many interesting things to do. Most of my good memories are in summer, and that's what makes the season so special for me.

  4. Always Love Your Pet, No Matter How Old They Get

    • By Lesley M. Patterson
    • Published by Family Friend Poems August 2018 with permission of the Author.

I wrote this poem because animals are very special to me. I am an animal advocate. Our family has 4 of our own little fur-babies. my dog (Kali) and 3 cats (The Haunt, Schiz, and Dudette). All of our pets are older (from 5-14 years old) All but the two brother kitties were rescued animals. I have a deep love for my animals, and I wanted to write this poem especially for children because they need to be taught to always be loving and kind to their pets, no matter how old they get.

Pets are people, too, just like me and you.
They need food in their tummies and lots of beefy yummies.

They are little, but their hearts are BIG.

  5. Make Me A Garden

    • By Sylvia Stults
    • Published by Family Friend Poems August 2018 with permission of the Author.

Always remember every nationality, every race, color, and person out there can contribute to the person you become. Knowing different cultures can only broaden one's horizon. To the parents of a child, you are the gardener. What type of garden will you plant? This is a great poem for parents/teachers to discuss with children.

    in Inspiring Poems for Kids

Help me design my garden of life
Full of iris, crocus, and lily
With daffodils that shine so bright
Like the sun of the greater deities.

  7. A Lifelong Companion

    • By Joydip Dutt
    • Published by Family Friend Poems August 2018 with permission of the Author.

Children are our future. If we can encourage kids to spend time with nature, they can find a true friend in it and thus create a bond. So, naturally they will be aware of the environment and will not do anything to cause harm.

  8. The Shepherd Slept

    • By Beryl L Edmonds
    • Published by Family Friend Poems August 2018 with permission of the Author.

I know how it feels to be lost at sea, to feel unloved, unwanted, and drowning in misery. There's no one to blame; it was my own anxiety and despair until I realised there was help out there. That help came from the Lord, my shepherd. I'm completely certain I heard Him speak to me, and suddenly everything fell into place.

    in Faith Poems

    Analysis of Form and Technique

There was a shepherd who fell fast asleep
So there was no one to see to his sheep.
The sheep were delighted, freedom at last
Followed the leader and ran away fast.

  10. Free To Be You!

    • By Lavonna N. Sinclair
    • Published by Family Friend Poems August 2018 with permission of the Author.

Growing up, the things that were told to me about how I look and what I should do or shouldn't do were directed towards me negatively and were very hurtful. I understand how it feels not to feel free in your own skin. So this poem is a celebration for all of those struggling with some of the same issues I went through and learn to love themselves. This is a great poem for teachers/parents to discuss with a child.

    in Inspiring Poems for Kids

I see you there, hiding in the dark.
Don't be afraid, I am here to help.
Look closely, don't you know me?
You see how I walk and talk; I am Unique!
