Mothers Reflection On Life
I have written poetry for pleasure all my life taking my readers or listeners through the full emotions from sadness to pleasure to stir up a pleasant war melancholic feeling.
This poem was inspired by my wife bursting into tears when our little girl announced her engagement at eighteen and mum was clearly not ready to see her little baby leave her.
My first poem was published by the principal of my school when he instructed me to read it to the school assembly at the age of ten.

Remember back dear mums
When your little girl was four
How it broke your heart to watch
As she marched briskly out the door
Remember back dear mums
When your little girl was four
How it broke your heart to watch
As she marched briskly out the door
She was on her way to pre-school
For the first time in her life
Eager was she and keen
To join the world of strife
And when you left her at the gate
And she said 'mum go home'
How heavy was your heart
As you hurried home alone
As you entered your empty house
With no toddler to be heard
I know you shed a tear or two
While feeling quite absurd
For you knew that she'd be back again
When those six long hours passed
So you busied yourself with housework
Hoping time would move on fast
But as each hour ticked on by
You missed her even more
While your hands were on your work
Your eyes were on the door
So when her father brought her home
You rushed to her at speed
To kiss and cuddle that gorgeous bundle
Was your life's most pressing need
Time passed by and the pain did too
You dropped her off
You picked her up
Eighteen years just flew
And you forgot that lonely day
And forgot that awful pain
Until a surprise announcement
Brought it back again
A few words was all she said
But it made your heart just sink
"My man and I are getting married
mum, what do you think ?'
What do I think my baby?
I think of all those days
When I comforted and caressed you
In a thousand different ways
In sickness I was there
To cool your fever down
And on each and all your birthdays
We certainly went to town
Your achievements were celebrated
Your failures overlooked
And each time that you were down
Your favorite meal was cooked
But you hid these thoughts inside you
As you wring your hands so tight
Her beautiful eyes were sparkling
And her happy face was bright
She wanted your approval
For you to love her man
The circle of life repeated
Of course you understand
But inside your heart was breaking
Emotions running wild
You knew that it was over
Time to let go your child
Your baby had grown up
That impish girl was gone
In front of you stood a woman
Eager to start a family and move on
Time moves on again until
There's an urgent ringing on your phone
Your daughter has had her baby
And she has a daughter of her own
Your son in law opens the car door
As he brings his family home
you hug your granddaughter to your bosom
As your daughter once again hugs her mum
And finally though the fuss and laughter
A vision of long ago appears
Your mother welcoming her grand daughter
How quickly go the years
And how bittersweet the tears.
