Birthday Poem

Birthday Poem For A Dear Friend

I wrote this poem 35 years ago to my best friend. Who would've guessed that we would still be as close today as back then? We don't see each other often these days, but when we do, it is as if we just spoke to one another the day before. It may take a few hours to play catch-up, but this friendship has lasted because we still care about each other and what happens in each other's lives. There is a trust and a bond that will forever keep us connected, and I know that she feels the same.

I love it. It reminds me of my friend on his birthday. How he enjoyed it to the fullest. I still recall the day like it was yesterday.

Here it is,
Your special day,
So I thought I'd take
This time to say

How nice it is
To have a friend
Who listens
and understands.

The kind of friend
Who's always there,
Ready to show
That someone cares.

You've cheered me up
When I was down
Just by simply
Hanging around.

And oh the times
We've spent in laughter
Have made me chuckle
For many days after.

We've stored many
Good memories away
As I sit here drowned
In memory today.

Wanted to share
This thought with you
Having you as a friend
Makes it my special day too.

Winning Poem for our January 2019 Poetry Contest - Birthday Poems

Interview with Marie Matheny, the winner of our January 2019 Birthday Poetry Contest

  1. When did you start writing poetry and why?
I started writing poetry at the age of 24 when my brother-in-law died in an automobile accident. He was 27 and I had a hard time accepting his death. I wrote my first poem for him to help me get through my grief. I found that it was therapeutic and that I loved expressing myself through poetry. Since then I have written many poems.
  2. In your introduction to your poem you say you wrote this poem 35 years ago. How did you find the poem after all these years?
I have always made copies of any poems I've written for anyone else. I wrote this for my best friend, so it has sentimental value and I have it in a journal where there are other favorite poems that were written at about the same period.
  3. On our Submit Poem Form we ask "Choose a poem that people from all over the world can relate to" How do you write a poem that is relatable?
I think every poem can be relatable because we all write about the same things. My only hope is to write a poem that is not only relatable but also memorable.
