Famous Family Poem

Edgar Guest (1881-1959) was a prolific poet who wrote many encouraging messages about everyday life. This poem captures the essence of a man who loves his family so much to sacrifice for them day in and day out. While he doesn't have much, he works hard for his family and shows self-control and determination when things don't go his way. This poem uses rhyming couplets and the repetition of “only a dad” to create a well-structured piece.

Only A Dad

Edgar A. Guest By more Edgar A. Guest

Only a dad, with a tired face,
Coming home from the daily race,
Bringing little of gold or fame,
To show how well he has played the game,
But glad in his heart that his own rejoice
To see him come, and to hear his voice.

Only a dad, with a brood of four,
One of ten million men or more.
Plodding along in the daily strife,
Bearing the whips and the scorns of life,
With never a whimper of pain or hate,
For the sake of those who at home await.

Only a dad, neither rich nor proud,
Merely one of the surging crowd
Toiling, striving from day to day,
Facing whatever may come his way,
Silent, whenever the harsh condemn,
And bearing it all for the love of them.

Only a dad, but he gives his all
To smooth the way for his children small,
Doing, with courage stern and grim,
The deeds that his father did for him.
This is the line that for him I pen,
Only a dad, but the best of men.

Hello everyone. It’s a Monday morning, and I’ve just begun working, but somewhere in my mind throughout the day I keep remembering my dad and his deeds. No matter how tired I become, I still receive some extraordinary strength, and a voice comes flowing from somewhere – of my dad, cheering me to move ahead and step toward my goals. It asks me every day to taste all the flavors of life, try and jump over all the hurdles that come my way and not take any shortcuts. He always used to tell me to be truthful and respectful. Another very important thing I learned from him is to share a smile with everyone, whosoever comes in your way. You don’t have to know that person; just smile. That person might be suffering from something bad, or the person might be upset due to some reason. I smile is so strong that it can heal any wound.
