Christmas Poem

Christmas Being A Difficult Time For Some

My husband died earlier this year and, although I treasure a lot of happy Christmas memories, I confess that I'm not looking forward to Christmas this time.

It's That Time Of Year

Christmas here once more,
hard to ignore, festive
wreaths on every door.

Housed inside is needled
pine, bright baubles shine
with tiny twinkling lights.

Trees glow, festive music
flows, lifts up hearts, baking
starts, excitement grows.

Little sticky fingers help frost
white icing on the cake, set mini
figures among the snowy peaks.

Traditional food abounds,
turkey with all its trimmings,
a flame-lit Christmas pudding.

Snaps of bursting crackers,
scattered paper hats and jokes,
sounds of popping corks.

Glasses brimmed with bubbles
of good cheer - that's how it is
for some - at this time of year.

Ann,
I love all your poems, and this one really speaks to me. You use such vivid imagery and paint a wonderful picture of what the holiday is for some while reminding us that it isn't festive for everyone, or every year. For some folks, the holidays are reminders of loss, or the realization that their "special" day will never measure up to the ideal. It is comforting to know that others out there may feel the same way. Thank you for sharing your words, your wisdom, and your heart.

Best wishes,
Virginia
