War Poem

Loss In Ukraine

The message sent, received, played out in your mind. Never having the right words to relay to the grieving. somehow just being there whether in person or from the heart. Our sister-in-law called and said her brother was killed fighting in the Ukrainian army in the war with Russia. We had never met her brother and yet tears fell. That night I wrote a letter to her brother from his sister. Too many have been written. Too many unanswered.

It's not just a name on some news flash
Or a call from a voice never wanted
It's your smile, your face
Holding tightly your embrace

                       As

Echoes of our words
Sway to the ground

                     It's

Footfalls in the hallway
After we were told not to get up again
It's games and laughter
And meals together
The soul of our family in our town

Your favorite tree still stands
Charred, with new spring leaves
A chill as you climb to the top
Youth dangles just beyond the breeze

                   I SEE YOU

Running down the street

                    Our

Neighborhood friends in flight
Chasing after childhood dreams
While lightning severs the night

                 I SEE YOU

Traverse through the rubble
Preserving our ancestral right
Our love entwin together
Tears fall without your light

               I SEE YOU

As a child playing

             I SEE YOU

Pale and brave

            I SEE YOU
