A Worm In My Pocket

My family and I moved to Japan a little over two years ago from America. I am the mother of two, a daughter, age 9, and a son who just turned 7. Since coming to Japan, my son has become obsessed with all things that wiggle and crawl. I have seen things here that look like they came from outer space. He is constantly bringing home bugs to show me. One day, after playing at the park, he had filled his pant pocket with worms. Not knowing this, I proceeded to do a load of laundry. You can imagine my surprise when I opened the washer!

One rainy day on my way home from school,
I found a big worm and thought it was cool.

I picked up the worm with my bare hand,

I picked up the worm with my bare hand,
held it up high, thinking how grand!

The worm was so cute and wiggled a lot.
I put him in my pocket to show Mom what I'd caught.

What will she say when I show her my find?
Will she let me keep it? I hope she won't mind.

Mom was in the kitchen when I showed her what I'd found.
She screamed, "No, way! Put it back in the ground!"

Now I'm so angry; she always says, "No."
If she won't let me keep it, then I will just go!

So me and my worm packed a sandwich or two,
ran out the door, and down the street we both flew.

We walked to the park and sat on a bench.
I pulled out my worm and noticed a stench.

He looked kind of floppy but wiggled a bit.
I thought, "Oh my Gosh, my worm is not fit!"

I laid him in the dirt and let him go free.
I guess that my pocket was not the best place to be.

He eats just about everything,
So that's why, with a sigh...

Sometimes I dream that I can fly.
I lift and flap my arms just so,
And soon I'm soaring to the sky.
Graceful like a bird I go.

I find a fluffy cotton cloud
And catch myself a comfy ride.
I cannot hear a single sound,
As slowly through the air I glide.

My silky cloud floats with the breeze,
Through the bluest sky.
Just like a sailboat on the sea,
With seagulls swooping by.

I look upon the streets below
And spy my friends at play.
I dive and dip and twirl around,
As they watch in awe and wave.

I feel so giddy, light and free,
The sun so warm and bright.
I think that I shall fly all day,
And catch a star at night.

But then the wind begins to blow,
And the clouds turn angry gray.
They growl and rumble as they go,
And chase the birds away.

And though it's fun to touch the sky,
I start to feel alone.
I don't feel welcome anymore,
I think perhaps I should go home.

So I lift my arms and tuck my head,
And drift back to the ground.
And when my feet are back on earth,
The rain comes pouring down.

Indeed I had the grandest time,
Up in the boundless sky.
But it's really much too lonely there
To live in all the time.

And though my friends looked up to me
And my heroic flying feats,
It seemed they liked me just as much
When I stood on my two feet.

So I'll do my flying in my dreams,
Where it's all just make believe.
And in real life, I'll stay right here,
Where I'm loved just being me.

A Child's Goodnight

I'm retired and live in southern Pennsylvania, USA, midway between the Amish farms of Lancaster County and the Gettysburg battlefield. When I was teaching in middle school, I noticed that most poems in the textbooks were free verse. As a boy I had enjoyed the cadenced rhymes of Poe, Kipling, Whittier, etc., so I began to write rhymed, metered poems for my students. This is one of them. Its stanzas have an 8-6-8-6 syllable pattern and iambic meter.

Lying In Bed Waiting To Fall Asleep

At night the sun lies down for sleep

At night I hear my father snore
And baby brother cry

My hamster racing on its wheel
And raindrops overhead.

At night I hear the floorboards creak
And neighbor's car meow.
I feel my pillow press my cheek
And night air cool my brow.

I think about the recent past
And plan the coming day
Until I fall asleep at last
And dream the night away.

He thought it was too cold.
Too cold on his tongue, too cold on his teeth,

At parties, the zoo, at the beach,
Ice cream was everywhere,

One time Logan did try ice cream.

He got a huge brain freeze!

“Never again!” Logan said!
“Eating ice cream is no fun!
I cannot freeze my brain again;
I've got only this one!”

No one was as upset
As one man, that is for sure.
It was Logan’s Pop Pop,
The great ice cream connoisseur.

“Please, Logan!” Pop begged.
“Please try it one more time!
Just try a small bite,” Pop said.
“Your brain will be just fine.”

Logan gulped, his eye squinted tight.
Pop Pop was NEVER wrong.
Maybe just one more try won’t really hurt.
He decided to be strong.

“Little bites are the trick,”
Pop Pop winked and said.
“That way the cold goes to your tummy
Instead of to your head.”

So Logan scooped a tiny bite of
Homemade vanilla cream.
He squeezed his eyes, stuck out his tongue
And then let out a scream!

“I LIKE IT!” Logan yelled,
And Pop Pop laughed.
“I knew you would, my boy!”
They laughed and both enjoyed tummies full of ice cream joy.

So what did you learn from Logan?
Remember this little rhyme!
Trying new things doesn't hurt!
And try them more than one time!

Beware not to use it;

Please take my advice

I am new to poetry (having only started last year), but I believe some of my work is quite good quality. Anyway, you be the judge.

I wrote about a child who dreams of flying but in the end finds out it's not all they thought it would be.

A girl shares about the special time she spends with her Grandpa.

This is a poem about a child who has a great imagination when it comes to picking out their first pet.

Due to a previous bad experience, Logan doesn't like ice cream. Logan's Pop Pop, an ice cream connoisseur, encourages him to give ice cream another try.

The poem is about a little girl who is asked what she wants to be when she grows up. She answers with things like, "I want to be a Princess," knowing nobody can stop her from following her dreams.

When I was a kid and it was foggy, it always reminded me of an endless sea, and I fantasized about going on all kinds of adventures...

Tired of all the hate in the world. I hope the next generation will remove this word from their vocabulary.

When I wrote this poem I had three daughters, no sons, but I had five grandsons. So true to facts, the words in this poem are some life tales and adventures. Then later, joy, joy, I had a granddaughter, then eventually two more grandsons.

Have you ever stood in the shower, looked down and been unable to see your feet without leaning forward? No, neither have I!

I love chocolate, so I decided to write a poem about it. My grandchildren loved it.
